Justin Varney

Dr Justin Varney is the Director of Public Health for Birmingham City Council leading work across the Council and with system partners to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens.
Prior to joining Birmingham Dr Varney has worked for Business in the Community, Public Health England and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. He has worked at local, regional, national and international levels of the public health system and led national programmes on a range of areas including health and work and physical activity.
He trained in General Practice before specialising in Public Health Medicine and has worked across both primary and secondary care settings. Justin has a special interest in lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans health inequalities and domestic violence as a public health issue. He is an independent advisor to the Council for Health and Work and in 2018 was awarded honorary fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in recognition of his work.
